DID YOU KNOW WHAT A HALL EFFECT SENSOR IS AND WHAT IS IT USED IN A VISCOUS CLUTCH FOR?

May 11, 2021

In viscous clutches with electromagnetic activation, it is very frequent for the ECU to receive a signal from the clutch indicating the fan rotational speed. This process is carried out thanks to the shared work of the hall effect sensor, located in the inner part of the control coil, and the magnetic ring.

In order to enable this communication, the sensor is supplied with a continuous voltage of 5V. When the sensor has been supplied and it is close to a magnetic field perpendicular to it, the sensor creates an outgoing voltage, proportional to the produced current that circulates through it, and generates the power of the magnetic field.

In electromagnetic viscous clutches, due to this effect, the current circulation is enabled or interrupted depending on whether the sensor is subjected to a positive or negative magnetic field. This is caused by a polarised ring, with 6 pairs of poles, and thanks to which the ECU knows at any moment the fan speed.
